A daring novella about the loss of innocence in pre-war Germany. Reenchentro is the story fed intense and innocent devotion between two young men growing up in “the soft, serene, bluish hills of Swabia,” and the sinister but all too mundane forces that end both their friendship and their childhood.
The year is Hans Schwartz is Jewish, the son of a Stuttgart doctor who ass A daring novella about the loss of innocence in pre-war Germany. Hans Schwartz is Jewish, the son of a Stuttgart doctor who asserts that the rise of the Nazis is “a temporary illness, something like measles which will pass off as soon as the economic situation improves.
Hans’s friend, the young Count Konradin von Hohenfels, has a mother who keeps a portrait of Hitler on her dresser. The two boys share their most private thoughts and trips to the countryside of southwest Germany, discuss poetry and the past and present of their country, and argue the existence of a benevolent God. The eventual disintegration of this cherished relationship foreshadows the fate of Europe’s Jews– but Uhlman doesn’t end his story with neat polarities.

Not a short story.
reencuetro A draft, that’s it. A little too emphatic.
Lately I’ve been interested in history especially in WWII history more than when I was in school, so I decided to reread this book which I was required to read at school but that I didn’t like and never finished it for the sole reason that it was a school book and that frev was for a teacher I hated. Now rereading this I reencuetnro know what I didn’t like about this book: This is a really short book and there’s too much description of things that don’t really matter.

There’s more description than actual events. Characters are flat and the narrative is condensed in few lines like in a summary. Fortunately I know a bit of German so I knew what I was reading, but there were no footnotes for people who don’t know a word of the language.
I found reencuenntro little reencuentr meaningful, especially at the ending, but it wasn’t the best I’ve read. I sometimes get the feeling that books about World War II ought to be highly rated simply because they’re about WW2, and therefore Reencuuentro feel guilty when I can’t in good conscience do that. I don’t know why that is. Anyway, this is one of those books where I can’t rate it much higher than I did.

At only pages it’s more of a novella than a novel, and because of the Danish translation of the title Iron Gate I had assumed that it took place in a concentration camp, rather than – as the case is – in a fairly upper-class school in Stuttgart, Germany. I know that’s my fault and I can’t blame the book for my misconceptions, but it still affected the way I viewed it.
That aside, the book was reasonably interesting, but neither emotionally nor intellectually engaging, with the exception of the very final paragraph. The end was thrilling, and for once I didn’t mind the climax being uh,man unexplained – it seemed to fit the rest of the novella.
Still, it seemed more like eel ought to be a couple of chapters in a much longer book, than a book in its own right. I spent most of this read just waiting for something to happen. I don’t mind slower books, or books that you need to think about – but this really seemed to lack substance although the ve was interesting. Perhaps I just missed the point.
If this had been expanded into a full-length novel it might have had a bigger impact. But as it stands, I found it to be a rather weak and forgettable novella. I thought it was boring but at the end it was good.
I love this book! I read it two years ago and I was thought it’s really amazing and I found it very deep View all 5 comments.

Trivia About L’amico ritrovato.
