Tranquility by Attila Bartis
I thought it was special for that. While I wasn’t turning pages at the beginning, toward the end all I could think was how much I hoped that these characters would turn out okay. These Hungarians write some pretty heavy shit! She is out of work because her daughter Judit, an accomplished violinist, has defected to the West some years earlier, and she is therefore blacklisted. In my head I had this review of this book that was about the other Weers they searched for in phone books.
That said, I did read this book in almost one sitting. That said, it is a beautifully told story, and it is translated by someone who has an excellent ear for English poetry.
Tranquility is anything but. My Eastern European history is pretty vague, as is my geography, but I do know Ceausescu ran Romania, which is were this novel is set, so Bartis must be Hungarian, or at least a Romanian writing about Hungary. The book is about a man-child writer and his relationship with three women who are as fucked up as he is – if not more: Mariel, you shouldn’t be heading off into lights analogy land.

There’s a brutal honesty in all that Bartis deals with in Tranquilityand this willingness to lay it all out gives the book an energy that at onc I finished Tranquility a couple of weeks back, and I’ve been trying to articulate my thoughts about this book ever since–a tough task, as it’s quite bartix anything I’ve read.
I don’t know how much, if any, of this narrative comes from Bartis’ own life, but the story within this book is gut-wrenching and yet impossible to tear oneself away from.

View all 22 comments. It’s interesting to nygualom why someone wouldn’t want to. There is some kind of resolution for the protagonist at the end, but I started to find it a bit of a slog to get through, particularly the brutal scenes like the following which piled up throughout the book.
